Whenever talking about the biggest Marvel movie flops, Ghost Rider tends to be mentioned as the biggest one out there. Some might say that any movie that makes a profit is a success. Officially, Ghost Rider earned close to $230 million while the budget was just $110 million. Well…this is a flop for Marvel.
Now the reason why Ghost Rider is seen as a flop is not this first movie. It was Ghost Rider: Spirit Of Vengeance that was the huge flop. Sony Pictures realized that the potential was low so the budget was cut to just $57 million. Then, the movie ended up making just $51 million in the US. It was the foreign market that managed to bring up income to a little over $130 million. Well…it shouldn’t have been like that since the second movie was actually better (personal opinion).
Fans still debate about why Ghost Rider was so bad. There is no way to deny the fact that it is a bad movie but why is this?
From my point of view, Ghost Rider sucked because:
- The Ghost Rider character was not as violent as he should have been.
- The script was really bad.
- The other actors (not Cage, he was not that bad) were simply bad.
According to Nicolas Cage, the reason why the movie was bad was that it should have been R-Rated, which was how he and the writer wanted. He was quoted as saying:
“Ghost Rider was a movie that always should’ve been an R-Rated Movie. David Goyer (the writer) had a brilliant script which I wanted to do with David, and for whatever reason they just didn’t let us make the movie.”
This does make a lot of sense. Sony does not have the best reputation and the truth is that it took a movie like Deadpool to show that R-rated works. Comic book characters are not just for young viewers. In fact, you cannot really make Ghost Rider family-friendly expect a hit.
In case you were not aware (I was not till today), there are some plans of making a new Ghost Rider movie. The news appeared after the character appeared in Agents of SHIELD, played by Gabriel Luna.
An R-rated Ghost Rider sure sounds like a good idea! No?
