Most people interested in technology already know about the Philips Hue smartlights that can be controlled with a smartphone or with voice commands. The Philips Hue Play Light Bars join the line to create more ambience and offer wonderful accent lighting. You can so easily install them, have great color and work really well with the Philips Hue Sync App. They are a little pricey at around $130 for 2 and an extra expense in the need to use Hue Bridge ($60 more). However, if you love Hue lights, you do want to consider them.

When you buy, you get 2 light bars (white or black), 2 clips to mount on a monitor, mounting screws, double-sided tape, a power pack and 2 vertical stands. On every single power pack you can add 3 bars, with additional bars costing $60.

One of these bars is 10 inches long, 1.7 inches wide and 1.4 inches high. A translucent lens covers it and the power cable is 78 inches long. Inside the gadget you get an LED bulb that can display an impressive 50,000 shades of white and 16 million colors. Bulbs are fully dimmable and are expected to last a maximum of 25,000.

To use the Hue Play Bars you use the same app as with all other Hue gadgets. On the home screen you see all rooms and lights that can be controlled. Then, you just choose what to do with the lights. Presets are available, of course, so your own scenes can be created, with the desired color palette.

Is It Worth It?

I do not want to bore you with all the details. You can see a clip with the Play Light Bars in action here. What I have to say is that these Play Bars offer really good colors and since there are so many white options available, the settings you can create are practically endless.

The best thing about the bars is that you can listen to music on Spotify or watch a movie on your TV and have colors automatically match the mood.

To put things as simple as possible, the Philips Hue Play Light Bars are wonderful when you want to complement music listening, gaming and TV viewing. You get synchronized lighting effects that are pretty cool.
